The biennial Great Tennessee Airshow was last held in June 2016. During a practice session, one of the Blue Angels aircraft, flown by Captain Jeff Kuss crashed, killing the pilot. (A summary of the reasons for the crash can be found here.)
The airshow was not planned to be held the following year (2017), but in 2018 the Blue Angels did not list the airshow on their calendar of performances.
Subsequently, for whatever reason, the Airshow will not be held this year. Instead, it is tentatively planned for June 2019 instead.
The Great Tennessee Air Show 2019
The Smyrna/Rutherford County Airport Authority Director John Black told the Daily News Journal that the Airshow would not take to the skies over Smyrna this year. He said:
“The jet teams are on a two-year schedule. We knew last year we would not be on the schedule for this year. One of the stipulations we have is … to have a show … we have one of the major jet teams there.
But there is an extremely high demand for those teams and although we were successful in securing teams, there’s never a guarantee because they receive requests from all over the country.
It’s really just scheduling. We have every intention to do this air show for years to come.”
In December 2017 the Blue Angels were confirmed for the 2019 show. I have to say that in researching for this article I found it difficult to find much information about or many images from the show.
About the show
On the ‘About Us’ page of the website I saw the following:
“The Great Tennessee Air Show will feature the world-famous U.S. Air Force F-22 Raptor & Breitling Jet Team. There will also be top military and civilian aerobatic performances, ground displays of aircraft and equipment from all four armed services and the Coast Guard, as well as displays by local police, fire and EMS providers.
The show offers outstanding family-oriented entertainment as well as terrific corporate hospitality options and extraordinary media coverage. We are pleased to be able to bring world-class entertainment to the Davidson and Rutherford County area.”
The airshow is located at Smyrna/Rutherford County Airport 278 Doug Warpoole Rd Smyrna, TN 37167.
In 2019 the Airshow will be held on June 8 and 9.
Not listed on the website when I checked in February 2018, but previously prices have been $30 for adults and $15 for children.
Only the Blue Angels were listed on the website when I checked in February 2018. I did find an article online that mentioned the afore-mentioned Blue Angels, Fat Albert, the F-22A Raptor, the Breitling Jet Team, the US Air Force Heritage Flight (P-51, A-10 and F-35) and the US Special Operations Command Parachute Team.
Nothing listed for ground displays.
I’m not able to determine the planned attractions from the website, however the same article I mentioned above-listed attractions including the Eagleville Soaring Club, Middle Tennessee State University and Murfreesboro Aviation.
